BIM in Asturias: more precise, efficient projects with no nasty surprises

Asturias, Gijón

Have you ever arrived on site to find the drawings didn’t add up? Have unexpected issues arisen that nobody anticipated, translating into cost overruns? BIM methodology exists, among other things, to prevent exactly that.

At AGHO Arquitectura, we have been working with BIM (Building Information Modeling) for over ten years. It is not a tool we adopted because it was fashionable: it is the way we think about and develop projects, and it makes a real difference to the quality of the final result.

What is BIM and what is it for?

BIM is a working methodology based on the creation of an intelligent digital model of the building. Unlike traditional 2D drawings, a BIM model contains three-dimensional information and linked data: materials, costs, timelines, technical specifications and the relationships between all construction elements.

This makes it possible to detect clashes between disciplines before they reach site, calculate budgets with greater accuracy, simulate the energy performance of the building and coordinate all parties involved in the project more effectively.

BIM in architecture projects: four concrete advantages

  • Greater budget control: The BIM model allows quantities and measurements to be extracted directly, reducing errors and making it easier to monitor costs throughout construction.
  • Fewer surprises on site: Multidisciplinary coordination during the design phase eliminates most incompatibilities. Fewer surprises, fewer stoppages, fewer cost overruns.
  • Clearer communication with the client: The intelligent 3D model allows the project to be visualised far more intuitively than technical drawings — before a single brick has been laid.
  • More reliable technical documentation: Drawings, details, specifications and quantities are all generated in a coordinated way from the same model, ensuring consistency across all phases.

Over ten years of experience in Revit and ArchiCAD

Our BIM specialisation has developed over more than a decade of working in architecture studios in France and Spain, across projects of varying scale and complexity: from individual homes to major public buildings. We work with Revit and ArchiCAD, the two industry-standard environments in the sector.

This experience allows us to get the most out of the methodology without it representing an additional cost to the client. BIM is built into the way we work — it is not an add-on service.

BIM for developers, contractors and other practices

Beyond applying it to our own projects, we offer BIM development services for developers, contractors and practices that need modelling, coordination or project management in a BIM environment. If you have a project underway and need technical support in this area, we can help.

Frequently asked questions about BIM in Asturias

Is BIM only for large projects, or does it work for homes and renovations too?

BIM is useful at any scale. For homes and renovations it allows us to detect clashes before work starts on site, produce precise technical documentation and present the project to the client in a much clearer way. The modelling effort pays for itself quickly through improved quality and fewer unexpected issues during construction.

A 2D project consists of independent drawings that have to be coordinated manually. In a BIM model, all the information is linked: if you change a wall on the floor plan, the elevations and sections update automatically, as do the quantities and budget. This reduces errors, saves time and produces more reliable documentation.

Yes — and it is one of the great advantages of BIM. The intelligent 3D model we generate allows the project to be visualised very intuitively: materials, finishes, layout, natural light. It is far easier to make decisions when you can see the space before it physically exists.

Yes. We work with developers, contractors and other architecture practices that need support with BIM modelling, project coordination or digital documentation management. If you have a project underway and need reinforcement in this area, get in touch and we’ll assess how we can help.

We work primarily with Revit (Autodesk) and ArchiCAD (Graphisoft), the two industry-standard environments internationally. The choice of software for each project depends on the type of commission, the team involved and the requirements of the client or developer.
